Spinal Anesthesia Risks

Spinal Anesthesia Risks

Are there any spinal anesthesia risks I should know about before having a spinal?

There are a few spinal anesthesia risks. The specially designed needle creates a tiny hole in your dura, the tough sac containing the spinal cord, fluid and nerves. The risk of headache has been reduced form 5-8% years ago to about 1% with the specially designed needles of today. The traditional “spinal headache”, scientifically called Post Dural Puncture Headache, occurs when you have a positional headache – severe when you are standing but not when you are lying down. The headache may start suddenly when you change position up to sitting or standing. Rare complications of spinal anesthesia includes infection, bleeding, or damage to a nerve.
