What is an Epidural?

What is an epidural? It’s actually the location of where the medication goes. So ‘getting an epidural’ is actually the procedure of putting the soft, tiny catheter in the right spot in your back – the epidural space. “Epi” means around and “dural” is the tough sac surrounding the spinal cord, fluid and nerves. That way, just like your intravenous (I.V.) you can get as much or as little medicine as you need, for the duration of your labor and delivery.
